rendering multi layers to a single EXR file?

Has something changed? I group different objects into different collections and render out as an exr. Maya renders out each collection as a separate exr file. Is it possible to render out one exr file with all the separate layers? I have watched a few tutorials on layers/collections and it seems like this had been possible. Am I missing something?
