Beginning

Hi all,

It's been ages since I've last used maya, but decided that I want to start working with it again. Just for private development.

Now I know that i'm not the most creative person. Which I think could very much be a problem.
The thing is, I actually love animating, and I kinda want to get into that.

So would it be advisable to start animating immediately, or should I start modeling first, and animate later?

Thanks allready,

SilverBlood

You can always check out the 11 sec animation club site.

Why do you have to be creative to model stuff? you dont, just start modelling thing you know best first then the rest will follow, I think it would be a good idear to make and rig your model first to start to understand how things work...........dave

Well, I've actually tried that in the past, but I just don't know where/how to start. And when I follow tutorials, I usually get bored a little, because it all seems to go so slow. I know that's wrong, and all beginning is slow, but I just can't seem to get into it. That's why I think that maybe if I start with animating, that I might get "results" faster, and keep going.

To be honest, I don't think you're going to get "results" faster with animation. At least you may be able to get a result faster if you download a pre-built rig, but to do proper character animation takes a lot of time and patience. But just to see if you like it, it might be a good idea to try to find a nice pre-built rig and play around a bit.

Sounds like one of those crap exercise equipment adds on sky.....Results and Fast!!!

''For only 5 bucks you can make a whole PIXAR movie in a week!! Spend no less than ten minutes a day creating the animation of your dreams, impress your friends even your dog!!'' Learning is so fast it'll make your 100 year old grandma look like shes wading thru treacle!!!

No...it wont happen fast..if it does it will be crap and you'll have wasted your own time.

good learning happens at a good pace...heed the words of your peers

I completely understand what you're saying, and I really don't expect results that fast. But in my experience, when I start modeling, it takes too long for my attention span (I think) to actually see what it is going to be.

When I did some small animations (things like a bouncing ball, some Ncloth, and other small things) I got to see "results" quickly. Even if you have to fiddle with that one setting for over 3 hours, you still see it change everytime.

I definately don't expect to become a pixar animator, I don't even have that much free time. I do however want to start basic, and get more and more advanced as I go.

So in short, my original question again: Should I start with modeling, or can you dive straight into animating?

you can dive into animating, why not nip over to creativecrash.com and download a free rigged character or something if you are too undecided to model etc....

its up to you how you go about it...we can only suggest....
