Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Super Quick Challenges

I think I broached this subject a few years ago, but I will say it again.

We run a monthly challenge (woot). But how about also running Speed Challenges, these are simple fast challenges where those who compete have to model texture and render an object within a specified time limit.

The same rules apply for this, that apply for the monthlys (show your work, must be all your owm work etc...), but no WIP thread would run as the work must be done in the specified time frame.

Smaller details would need to be worked out, like how do you cope with the time differenes, stuff like that. I think it would be fun to see who can produce what when under pressure and it gives those who are unable to give up the time for a long drawn monthly project, to compete in a competiton.

I think it would be a great learning too also.

What do you think people? SPEAK UP!user added image

set it up.
just set a week as an overall deadline. entries must (for example) have taken 2 hours or less including render time.

I like that idea the only problem is coming up with the ideas. I think sometimes we all get stumped on what to do for even the monthly challenges. So maybe if we start flooding the challenge suggestion pages with *Good Ideas* then we would actually be able to do something like this.

So what should be the topic for the first speed challenge?

The speed challenges would not be topic based like the Monthly ones. That would allow for too much interpretation, instead I propose that the speed challenges are based on day to day objects, making the challenge more hard surface modelling based.

Now I am not going to take credit for this idea, I am kind of copying the idea from another site I used to use when I first started out with SoftImage.

To help you out with this I will post some of my past speed challenge stuff. All the images were done within 1 hour, they are not great as I had literally just started, so be gentle user added image

Have a gander at these user added image https://simplymaya.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17281

There's already a forum set up for this: https://simplymaya.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=51
It can be one on one, or open ended. Just start a thread and do it. I believe there's a Nike slogan in there somewhere.

The Battle Arena doesn't get any love from members... I think if someone starts up a battle then it will happen. No prizes, just glory. Go for it.

Stwert has a point we can setup speed challenges through the battle forum just start a new thread (Open Speed Challenge or something like that) give a start and end time and a few basic rules and we'll see how many people show up.

I've never done one before so if you want to start this one PF I would join in. We should hold them weekly say every Wednesday or Friday though most people in my experience are scrambling on Fridays trying to get ready for the weekend, So we might have a better turnout if we don't do them on Fridays.

The battles are a one on one not site wide. Battles are specific to the people involved and are not what I was proposing or anything like what I am proposing.

There is a sub-forum in the battle area called 1-on-1 battles, but I think the battle arena is still a good venue for this. I just called it a battle instead of a challenge to avoid confusion with the official monthly challenges. I started one today user added image: https://simplymaya.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36576

You can always wait for something exactly like what you are proposing. I personally think that if things just get going in an unofficial, member-driven setting, there's a higher chance of something like that getting bumped up to a more official level, with perhaps prizes and proper judging and stuff.

Meh Battles can be set up as open challenges they don't have to be one on one.

The only problem with Speed Challenges is that a lot of people would end up with hundreds of mediocre unfinished models. The challenges can be fun but also distracting, most of us need to be focusing on accomplishing models or animations that could go towards demo reels.

Just my thoughts at least user added image
