general rendering question

dear maya gods...
sorry to bother you with such as simple question but i have i dont have a clue how to solve my prob on my own. i have used 3ds max a long time and now wanted to learn maya. i have the following problem. when i use mental ray with GI and FG in connection with an area light i get a really grainy looking image (see attachment). my similar renderings in 3ds max look much smoother. which parameters do i have to tune? is it an anti-aliasing problem, a GI or FG problem? thanx for your help.

Try increasing your final gather rays. That could be the problem.

Try upping your samples in FG. Try a sample setting of Min: 3 max: 30 and see how that looks.
