Recommended output for 3d for print

I have to admit I am stumped on why my pics are coming out kind of grainy. The resolution is set at 300 dpi when I output the JPEG. What does anyone recommend for output show I can scale up and down comfortably without losing printing quality. I was taught 300 but apparently that is not working. I have not done any graphic design work in two years so I forget how to convert inches into a proper pixel size. I have three scenes I need printed at hi-res at 8.5 x 11. What would the pixel count in maya be for that output.

I went in photoshop and typed in the dimensions and it gave me 2550 x 3300 pixels at 300 resolution for 8.5 x 11.

Hey banksta, you did the right thing posting your question. The hard part is usually waiting for someone who knows the answer to reply. Glad you figured it out though. No bothers here
