It seems as if you mirrored the head across the wrong axis.

how do i mirror the head in the correct axis since i have combined all the polygons i.e the head, the torso, the arms and the legs into one polygon surface and i then converted the combined polygon into subdiv. Can i delete the head and mirror it separately?

Duplicate the original side of the head and scale this in the - or + X by 1 (-1 or 1) and this will allow the head to be positioned correctly. Also make sure the axis is set to the origin 0,0,0 before duplicating.

To be able to set the Origin select the object and press Insert, then use the move tools whislt holding X to snap it into position. Then press insert to go back to the standard tool...

If you have got all the peices combined, you might want to seperate polygons, so that they are individual peices, then get one of the sides of the head the right way, then do what r@nsid said user added image

To add to that, if separate doesn't work, you can just select and delete the faces that make up one side of the model.
