Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

There's a free video tutorial called "image planes and setup" in the tutorials section. Just click the VIP link up top and choose the free tutorials. That will teach you how to setup reference planes. You can also use k-man's helpful refplanes script which can be found in the following thread. When you install the mel script, and type "refplanes" in the command line, a dialog box will pop up allowing you to browse for images being used for the top, side, and front views. Then, it creates the planes automatically. I'm currently working on a modification of it with his help for adding a back view plane as well. You can also move the created planes easily for translating along an axis if the default isn't what you need.

I don't have 4.5 but perhaps selecting the face, shift selecting the fur shader in hypershade, right-clicking the fur shader, then choosing "assign to selection" might work. Does it?

Another ?

I want to make a poll out of a cube. But i want one end to round like a cilender, and end up square like a cube on the other end. how can i do this? (Hurry please)

Also, how ca i group objects in a way that when i 'Smooth' them, they stay together. If i 'Group' them, they dont smooth together, same if i 'Parnet' them.

Ok, some answers (I assume you're using polys for everything):

1) Use the attribute editor for the fur to change settings numerically. Or you can also 'paint' these settings using the Paint Fur Attributes tool

2) For your poll you could select the 3 sides (faces) you want rounded and then click smooth in the polygon menu (you might need to tweak the settings of the smooth by clicking on the square next to it in the menu). Or you can make your poll have more edges on one side (use the subdivide tool in the poly menu) and just move these manually into the rounded shape as you desire.

3) use the combine function in the polygon menu. Or if the bits you want to group stick through each other you might want to use the boolean > combine function instead.

I hope this helps you user added image

Hi Ultra, it sounds to me that you are trying to run ahead too fast in Maya, just my observation based on this topic, maybe you should check out some of the free tutorials here, or the tutorials which come with Maya, once youve worked through those some things may become a little clearer.

use the paint fur attributes tool option box (in the fur menu), then set the attribute that you wish to paint (which in this case is baldness), set brush value to 0, then 'paint away' the fur in areas you don't want it.
