Default paint effect hair or maya's hair systems

which do u prefer to use or think is better i havnt touched the paint effects yet and im just trying to figure out how to effectively use the normal hair/fur system. So any tips would be helpful or tut pointage. but also which u think is more effective and maybe a little bit of why
