Attaching a lofted surface to a NURBS primitive: impossible?

If I try to attach two lofted surfaces, everything works fine. If I try to attach two NURBS primitives, everything works fine. But when I try to attach a NURBS primitive and a lofted surface they both disappear. Why is that? I there any way to attach them without them disappearing?

Do the isoparms for each surface match up? Are the UVs flowing in the same direction?
