random vertex texturing question

hi all. ive been running my eye over some of the other cg society workshops. i was advised to look out for some fx courses, to learn about particles and fluids etc and how to render and composite them into matte painting projections, but at the moment the course available is based around 3dsmax, and id feel well out of my comfort zone doing that.

i have also had an eye on the zbrush character sculpting courses, which seem to come up fairly often. i notice in the course structure, it covers a topic called vertex texturing, which seems to be seperate from creating uv maps. is this a different technique to texturing models, or am i being dumb and its just the usual painting on uv map?
