Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Making a hole

I am trying to make a headphone jack for an Ipod I am modeling. The Ipod is a polygonal object, so i need to figure out a way to make a small hole one of the sides. Is there anyway to cut a hole in a polygon?
Thanks

David

You could try using booleans under the polygons menu selection. Even though they may add some uneeded geometry they really are handy for your holes. I also think that there is a make hole under the polygons or edit polygons selection.

Yeah, i am trying to use the make hole tool, except i can't figure it out. I am supposed to select the face i want to make a hole in, then the face the hole will be in the shape of, but nothing happens, nothing at all. Any ideas

i might be wrong.. because im a maya noob. but seeing from what most people do, i think it would be nicer not to have edge for the earphone jack.. but like extruded inwards faces, kinda like how people make nostrils on head models.

but once again, ima noob so.. ask around, lol

Yeah, bubbleme does bring up a good point. The headphone jack is not really a hole, but an indentation. Good thinking user added image

Yeah thanks all you guys. I ended up using booleans to subract the area just a little, making an indentation like you suggested. Then i just extruded those new faces inwards, and it all looks good.
Thanks for all your help
