Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Your idea of making it mechanical sounds very good indeed. I just automatically went down the human route without even thinking about other ways.
If I get the chance this next week then I'll have a go at working a mechanical movement into the body and try and get that elusive weight element in. Well, maybe after I've remade the rig yet again - rigging those hands are killing me user added image

horray for set driven keys user added image
I'd IK rigged the fingers and they were jumping about a fair bit and doing wierd things when other parts up the joint chain were moving - so after a bit of digging around I figured out FK with set driven keys and now have a control for each hand that closes the fingers into a fist. I've also made some changes to the rig and am learning about all these contrain options. So now its back to the important part of the challenge - animating user added image

Glad to hear that you are figuring it out T1ck - looking forward to seeing an update. Are you still planning to do a wind up punch for your second animation?

I think so arran though a mechanical walk would be cool if there's time user added image
This rigging thing is hard but yet again addictive...

theres also the expression editor wich you could make your own IK/FK swich with something like:

(create attribute called IK/FK switch
, choose Integr as type
in expression editor now add this line -->

if IK/FK swtich = 1 "nameofIKhandle".IkBlend = 1
if IK/FK swtich = 0 "nameofIKhandle".IkBlend = 0

no quotations

now wherever you add that attribute you can control you IK/FK, its kayable also, and saves you trouble

OR

try making those things a group under the main hierarchy, or a double group to be sure

Pretzels and Beer
Pizza Pockets and Computer programers
Shortcuts and 3D artists

May we always be together.

a good tip to know that 13uRneR, thanks user added image

well I dumped my attempted rig last week and started using the lowman animation rig (the one kiveun is using to great effect). It's a lot better than anything I can do and gives some cool control over the bodily parts.
I'm on very slow dialup this week (house sitting) so cant get a current animation up yet. Hopefully that will come on monday. All I can say is that it is a wind up punch trying to use compression of the body before the strike (I've been doing lots of compression techniques at sabre classes over the last couple of months and that is infuencing the punch).

finally home and back on broadband user added image
here's the early stages, I've been trying to keep the keyframes as few as possible. Still working out the final position for the right leg etc.. It needs a lot of work yet.

first punch test

Good work T1ck! user added image

I really like the build up of the punch and the way that his fist swings through and his right leg follows is excellent too. Well done mate.

Are you planning to add this to your transformer?

it needs more exaggeration and the timing of certain parts (left arm etc) is still a little out. This is going to have to be the rig and character for the final piece until I learn more about creating rigs. It would be nice to get the transformer doing the punch though.

Hey Tick! Cool action so far! Are you gonna land his foot and return him to the original stance?

Cheers! priimate.

hey priimate, hows things going? I love your final piece by the way user added image
I've added an end to the animation in the latest one today, he stops the movement and stands back up at the end. I think some of the movements need exaggerating a bit more.

Any tips/help would be welcome! user added image

I think a more exaggerated lead with the fist would help. Also the torso needs more movement.

Its for the simplymaya challenge on this site, they run every 2 months and I've found that they are a great way to learn new skills user added image

Hey t1ck135,

Your last punch video is very nice.

No crits to make, I'm sorry user added image

Looking at it and I love it.

Just foots who slide on the floor ... it's curious but it's possible so ...

i don't think you have to touch the torso. It's nice that way.

Good luck mate, last days user added image
