Its a very good book to go further.
But its a book dedicated to mental ray, host (says: Maya) specific iusses are not covered. Additionally you should have a rather solid background in rendering, as its written more like a reference, you won't find something like tutorials.

If you know what you want to know, then there is no better book available, a beginner would probably be overwhelmed.

I bought the DVD actually.

It did help some but it is not as clear as I thought and gives no specific of how to use MR in an animation scene.
