Greyscale?

I'm following a tutorial on specular mapping and it says; "To create this image I make a greyscale image of my texture map, and bump up the contrast."

How do I create a greyscale image of the texture map in Photoshop?

image > mode > greyscale

or image> adjust> desaturate
