Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

First work in Maya

This is my first work in 3D.

The thing on the right was meant to be the ship from Flight of the Navigator but i haven't got the shape quite right yet.

The ship on the left just evolved.

With any luck it'll improve over time.

Comments and suggestions would be great

I think for a first attempt they are reasonably good, some suggestions:

using a chrome shader in a largely empty scene will look strange as there is nothing to refelect off the chrome, try adding to this scene i.e. image plane/s maybe, further models, etc that should help bring out the shader, maybe post a wireframe image its hard to tell but your mesh looks a bit distorted?.

From the looks of it, your chromed model is abit no-smoothed (sorry, cant think of the word for it right now, LOL). But yea, as gordon7up said, you need more surroundings in your scene to really bring out the chrome. user added image

Cheers for the imput.

Still feeling the noobest of the noobs but loving 3D. Well more to the point loving my new laptop!!

I've started creating a room where the ship is to be investigated not great but learning the ropes slowly.

I'll increase the scale of the room soon.

P.S This is the friendliest forum i've been on!

I'm going to ditch this crap and model a classic bike from blueprints and not stop till I know what I'm doing. I'll keep posting my progress coz I love seeing what other noobs are doingand I'm sure others are the same.

Anyway I'll start a new thread for the bike.
Any comments or advice would be fantastic!

This is nice but simple. Seams like you have outgrown it already. Will be looking forward to the bike.

Thats seems to be exactly the case.

I've spent about two hours on the bike and am loving every minute of it. I'm modeling parts in the frame that will be under the petrol tank and lights that wont be seen but hay its practice!!

I'll post the frame when its done....or when i get stuck!!!!!
