Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

May/June - Noob - Jedi Bob

Hey there. I found this site towards the end of the last challenge, had a rudimentary coffee-making robot, but didn't get far in the few days I had.

For this month I'm going to give a try to a Sea Lion.

Hey, looks fun. You seem to be experienced with maya, but you only found out about this site recently. HOW DID YOU SURVIVE? I would be nowhere without SM. Anyways, welcome to SM and good luck on your project (it looks good, and a sea lion is perfect (is ok for a guy to say cute?))

Heh. You tell me. Actually, there are quite a few good tutorials "in the box", but I have found the cartoon dog tutorial here to be quite helpful. As for the sea lion, I like the playful way they move. Hopefully I'll get a chance to animate this guy.

Thanks. Putting a nice shader on it makes it look better than it really is.

Here's the finished wireframe, I converted to SubD's and then reduced it, seems to have cleaned up the mesh a lot (I had a LOT of 3,5 and more-sided polys...)

Nose, eyes, ears, whiskers, tongue and teeth added, reshaped the pectoral muscles and front flippers closer to references, rear flippers finned.

Next task is shading and texturing.

Thats a very happy looking sea lion user added image

And so he should be, excellent work you've made of him so far. Where are you going with this one now? Bump map might be ideal in my opinion for very fine skin detail, but good luck with whatever you do with it.

Looks good. Now a good texture and another pose coz it looks like it's been fired like a torpedo. Hmm, maybe you shouldn't change the poseuser added image

Amazing work, I think it would look photorealistic if you put it in say a fluid that is somewhat murky or watery.

Painted the body

Painted the body - I think it's starting to come together. A little (lot of) weirdness going on with GI in mental ray. I haven't turned caustics on yet, maybe that'll fix it. Who knows.

Bump map is next, then a specular map, then I'll think about rigging. I HATE rigging, all my non-tutorial attempts so far have been horrible failures.

As for a final scene, I'm thinking of putting him in a kelp forest, with light filtering down from the surface.

That sounds good. Especially with the bump map, and on top of that the kelp and light (if they look real) should all fit in place and leave a pretty good scene. GOOD LUCK.
