Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

The HMS Victory

Well I think I have got to the stage where I have to draw a line under this project and move on, thanks to everyone who commented and gave their crit on it. Much apreciated.

Here the basic shot, could do with some mood lighting but it's mainly to show the model.

And finally version 1 of a desktop I made with the model. I think for version 2 I will do something a little better with the sails and possibly have a picture of Nelson's face with his famous slogan ''England Expects"

Enjoy

I know what your saying about the texture, but in my defence im a modeller first then I try to texture what I have done.

It'll come in time.

Arrrrrrrrr, splice the mainsail and weigh the anchor she's afloat!!

Top modelling Mr LIVID, I fear that she may be taking on water through the rear gun ports though.

Well done,

Mat.

seems a shame to put so much effort in then abandon the project... this could be awesome and it's not the sort of subject matter you see a lot of in CG. You should maybe take a break then come back to it and finesse it. I do believe it would be worth it. Finish the modelling e.g. the flaps over the gun ports etc. Add some nice sails and then some people on it... it would look great!!!

Next job would be to modell some people chucking buckets of water overboard! user added image

Probably fix that for Version 2 of the desktop. Either that or i'll just have the front sticking out of the water.

Pure_Morning -- I see what you mean, I did have some flap done but I forgot to turn their layer on when I did the render. I'll sort that out by tomorrow.

I see what you mean about leaving it. At this current stage im not good enough at texturing to get it better. When that time comes I will sort it out once and for all.

I'd not bother with the desktop... being honest it doesn't do the model justice at all. I'd stick to modelling and texturing the ship more than worrying about a desktop render. It would probably look better as an ambient Occlusion (clay) render than the scene you have it in now.

Well for my showreel (which Framestore will more than likely be receiving) I have a camera flying around it with just a soft blueie grayie colour on a light pastel background.

Really excellent model, although I have noticed that you missed the anchors out. I'm really looking forward to seeing it when you get round to adding all the little bits and pieces in.

Keep up the excellent work!

This is true, well spotted.

All things to consider when I come back to this project and try and improve it at a later date.
