Jack

I've taken a break from my serenity model before I texture it as I was losing inspiration and didn't want to ruin it by rushing to finish so I thought I'd give modelling a humanoid character a shot.

Jack is the lead character in the illustrated novel 'The Plucker'. He's a jester type jack in the box doll who's been given the heart of a viper which makes him double hard!. His mission is to kill the plucker, a malevolant spirit which feeds from the souls of childeren by sucking their 'gusto' from their toys, and save Thomas (his owner) and the other toys.

Here's where I've got to so far....

Hello folks,

I've roughed out the head today. It still needs a fair bit of work but I thought I'd post my progress anyway. It's been a much steeper learning curve than roughing the torso, looking at it I can now really appreciate the need for edge loops when it comes to animating.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Mat.

I know its probably going to be stylised but the torso could do with a fair bit more work. It looks a bit overly streched in the middle section and the bum sits way lower than what you'd expect.
I like the pointy effect on the face though, very jester like user added image

Thanks folks,

meredith, I'm modelling this by extruding edges and moving a lot of vertices. This is the first time I've done a person and I've found the help on Jays 'New Character' thread invaluable. once I got the hang of edge loops things started to get a little easier.

T1ck, you're right, the the body does need a fair bit of work doing to it. He's not human though so proportions are very different, hopefully I'll get them right.

I have decided to have a Maya day today so I should have some sort of progress by the end of it.

Cheers,

Mat.

Hello again,

It seems that I've just been pushing and pulling existing vertices around all day, I guess it's all part of learning! I've managed to get the lower legs done, I'm not particularly happy with the feet but at least the general shape is there for me to play round with.

Take it easy,

Mat.

I think Jack's thighs, hips and torso are more slender than you've modeled so far. I've just pulled out my copy of the book as I haven't looked at it for a while. Its a real treat for the eyes!

Anyhow, keep it up, Mat!

Dave

EDIT: Your first post of the torso looks more accurate to the character IMO

Cheers for your thoughts Dave, the book's a beauty isn't it!

I know what you mean about him not being quite skinny enough, he's more straight up and down really. whenever I adjust him I seem to add curves as though he's human rather than a toy, I'll try to sort him out today.

Take it easy,

Mat.

Hello,

Jack's been on a crash diet and lost those unwanted pounds! It was just a case of pulling the vertices in from under his arms to just below his waist. The only worry I had was that his head was going to look out of proportion but it seems ok.

Any thoughts would be cool. Cheers,

Mat.

The only thing I can realy hit on is that the legs look way to long for the length of the arms

Cheers Rob,

I'm working on the arms at the moment, once his hands are on it should make a big difference. I do need to lengthen the forearm or shorten the upper arm a touch as well, Jack is a very lanky guy with peculiar proportions!!

Take it easy,

Mat.
