Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

Bullet texturing and engraving.

Right, I'm making a bullet project for my friend.

I've made the basic shape of the bullet, and I want to now texture it (Very shiny brassy type metal look) and engrave his name onto it. I've found the text create option, i've written his name but I don't know how to make the text engraved..

I've searched and can't find how to texture a bullet :S

Help please, thanks.

u can booleans the text but there is an easier option

uv map the bullet and apply a bump map in this map will be engravings and any think else u want

as for the material u need an environment for it to reflect
hdri is an option

u can also have a look an mental ray node called dgs (although u wont be able to bump map this way)

what version r u using 7 or 8

in 7 for booleans u select ur 2 objects
first select ur bullet then ur tect go polygons booleans and difference
and it will cut it out

the other way: select ur bullet
go polygon uv's and automatic mapping
then tweak the uvs to to get a map so there is no streching
(window - uv texture editor)
F1 will help
then export this map and paint a bump (black and white) map in PS ect
create a new blinn in the hypershade (window -rendering editors- hypershade)
then under blinn click the checkered box next to bump map
chose from file and locate ur bump map

I don't get how thats got anything to do with engraving words onto a bullet.

Why is that so complicated to colour my bullet and stick a few words on it?

Reckon you could help me make one?? ^.^ I saw your T-Rex, you seem experianced.

Dude I know your a beginner, but have a read in the help files its a simple procedure to do what your after but I think that you might be trying to run before walking.

Press F1 and do a search for UV mapping and Bump mapping.

That being said -- I'm not a beginner and I can't understand what he's talking about -- booleans for textures? o.o

I assume the model is made -- (s)he just wants a texture over it.

Select the model -- cylindrical projection -- rotate it to face the direction of the bullet.

Open UV texture editor under "windows" menu and save the UV snapshot with transparency. Use that 2d image to create your 2d texture in photoshop. Apply them as a diffuse and bumpmap.

I'd explain better but its 4am.

soory if i wast clear
ill clear it up

the reason i said booleans is some people like to actially have
the text as part of the model - u can do it with other detailing aswell
i personally dont do this but there are a lot of people that do both on here and cgsociety then (s)he could just apply a simple blinn without the need to map the model

the other node based way was/is the best and is the alternative to actually modelling it into the model
however they will have to learn how to map without streches and seams

hope this clears up

also did u make it from nurbs or polys?
in polys u could just use a cyclinder and scale in the top with a loop part way down so its a cyclinder at the bottom and a cone/semisphere at the top

then like the post above select the faces of the cyclinder part and do a cyclindrical map
if u engrave in this section this is all the mapping u will need just move the rest of the uvs off of the cyclinder part

This, in English is what I want:

1. My bullet engraved (Dont be sS)
2. My bullet textured (Gold?)
3. My bullet to have Matrix style effect behind it. (I can do that)
4. My bullet to be placed into a game clip. (Camera rotations just like matrix etc..)

https://www.barnesbullets.com/

That video on the front page gives you a good idea.

This in english is what you need to do

1 - Use a bump map, but your going to have to UV map your model too, if not try to boolian it but good luck as they rarely work well, again either google a uv mapping tutorial (theres one at highend 3d), and use the help files it tells you all about bump maps and uv mapping. Dunno what sS means???

2 - For gold use a dark brown colour for the actual colour, up the specularity and give the spec colour a light yellow colour (use blinn, then play with the roll off etc till it looks right (make sure youve got an environment to reflect with raytracing enabled). Also if your going to go fore realism then I would suggest using a fresnell effect for the reflections.

3 - Ya Sorted on that

4 - Aint a clue about adding it to a game but if you want to make an animation like the site you gave then keyframe the bullet and animate the camera, again with keys.

If you look in the right plages i.e highend 3d, cgtalk in the maya tutorials sections youll find some tutorials that will help you out

If your still stuck then pay me and i'll do it for ya, LOL!

Easy man
