Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 1
This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

The FX CHALLENGES will always be going for photoreal.

HOWEVER, feel free to enter and as long as you use a shot from the source imagery either in a 2d/3d camera projection onto your base geometry, or as part of a larger matte painting to extend the shot, you can model most anything, and at any angle that you want in order to achieve a Dam Breaking Scenariouser added image

Welcome aboard!

In this case "Matte Painting" is reffering to anything that you paint by hand to either extend, or augment a given plate.

Also, you can do whatever you wish as far as look and style, but just remember for future reference that photorealism is what the FX Challenges are all aboutuser added image

right ok
ive already started
decided to go for a semi-realistic look IE my attempt at photorealism
ive never really done much with fluids so that might be an issue but ill give it a go

EDIT: can it be longer than 10secs?

Check the Maya help for the Fluid examples, or the Autodesk AREA blogs for Duncan Brimsmead's NCloth fluid examples.

They should lead you in the right directionuser added image

Also, for the challenge, the shot can only be 240 frames long @ 24fps. (10 sec).

After the challenge is over, feel free to make a longer shot if you wishuser added image

When you say dam break, does the whole think have to come crashing down or can it be slightly less dramatic?

I also have an ocean at the top, how do i get the water in it to colide with the dam?

Im really starting too think im far too noobish too do this compo

That is up to youuser added image
Small cracks and a few jets of water, or a total demolition, either way is fine.
  • I also have an ocean at the top, how do i get the water in it to colide with the dam?
Sadly as the judge, I can only help you so much, but I can suggest checking the help for fluid collisions, or you might try doing the shot in passes like one pass could be your main body of water, then another could be a "colliding" particle pass, etc.

Well, this is a good way to learn! user added image

Good to see you on board man.

You cant really get the ocean plane to move like a fluid, it's just for making an ocean or a lake.

Have a look into what rage said, thats what we have being using to get an idea of the sim, you basically need to make a block of particles and then do the stuff on them. Might sound like a shameless plug, but chesk out our thread might help out in pointing you in in a direction
