Smooth character

Hi, i want to know if when i am modeling a character for animation, should i smooth him out(adding more loops) or i should leave it as it is. The problem is that when i smooth him, there is alot of vertex and moving them to create my blendshapes can be troublesome so i am wondering if smoothing it is neccessary or not.

For moving lots of verts around use the soft select option in the move tool panel..............dave
