Entering Fur Attribute Paint is incredibly slow

My character has about 20k polygons. When I enter the fur attribute painting tool, Maya freezes for about 1 minute. The U and V samples for the fur attribute painting are set to 160x160. Anything higher, 256x256 or even 512x512 makes entering the fur attribute painting tool “let’s head for lunch break” kind of impossible.

Is that kind of behavior normal or can I optimize my setup in any kind? Please also see attached screen shot.

As it is, painting fur attributes is a major pain because of the low resolution of the maps and still a major waiting time every time I enter the attribute paint tool.
