Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

combining smooth preview and non-smooth geometry

i have different pieces of geometry in want to combine. some has the smooth mesh preview (3) applied and others not. can I combine the two and keep the relevant smoothing on each piece, or is it a case of adding edge loops to preserve the shape?
I've try applying a proper smooth operation, but it seems like a lot of polygons for what is a fairly small object..

Your best bet would be a proper smoothing IMO. When you press 3 it has to display the same amount of polygons as 2 levels of smoothing would

that makes sense - level 2 smooth preview... thanks for the tip.
i've done it with edge loops now, i decided to have a go knowing i'd get an answer here if it didn't work. but it looks ok as it is.

thanks anyway!
