Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Dont try doing every thing at once, you have added edges for the eye that are not going any where this is creating engons (polygons with more then 4 sides) and you have 3 side polys you need to clean them up............dave

I know, but i can use the Interactive split to continue the eye edges. They won't stay like that.

Do you mean these triangles? How can I clean them up? Make them have 4 points? If so, where will I take the lines that will form in order to have a 4 point polygon instead of them? Or should i just delete edges/vertices and turn them into 4 point?

Some times its not easy but can be fun figuring out how to fix meshes, the arrows are pointing at the edges to delete Ive just done the first 2...............dave

Thank you.
It's almost like chess in a way. Seems I have to figure out what consequences one action can have.
I'm still wondering if I should turn this pentagon into a quad (yellow edge is the considered edge) because then I will end up with a new triangle near the mouth.

Red edges: I'm not so sure I should draw them there even though no triangles will be formed.
Green: What I'm pretty sure that I should draw to continue the eyes.

That looks better,Try to get the edges to fan out from the eye. You only want to add more edges were there will be detail.................dave

It turned out like this.
So, what are the rules?
Do all the surfaces need to be 4-point, no more no less?
How can I solve certain triangles such as the ones from the eye? (do they need solving?)
Must all edges loop? (If so, there's a problem on the cheek area, one edge on the right is going nowhere)

Delete arrows, there is more to be done but this should give you a start..........dave

Edit:Every time you make a cut or add edge loops you should be moving some of the verts around to get evan spacing

I'll try to get the spacing right, but is there any way to make the Interactive Split Tool to connect directly to vertices or do I have to merge the vertices every time I use that tool? Seems other users have been having trouble with it too.

Rounded the head as much as I could with current edges (one new line might be needed to make it rounder and also considering to add a new line over the forehead).
I will also continue that unfinished edge on the cheek.

Sorry my drawing was not clear, move the vert to the other vert then merge. I have maya 2009 so do not have the interactive cut...........dave

Oops... and I turned that into a new loop. O_o But if I'd merge it, wouldn't that create a new triangle?
Should I delete the edges I've made in 3rd picture?
I have Maya 2012.

If you take out the loop and merge the two vert all will be OK........dave

Ah, yes. I see now, and then I'll just continue the other loop from under the eye and it will be all quads.

Is that loop under the eye good? Or it shouldn't be there?
