rendering layer qn

Hi, i have my scene seperate into different layers, the character and the environment are in different layer and i also have a shadow layer.

I am wondering if the amount of time maya took to render the layers is as long as the time taken to render the masterlayer which all the objects are in one layer or is it faster?

thanks

from my experience it was faster to render the layers and then composite them, plus I had more control over the final look.
