Making 2 Faces 1, need help!

how do i merge 2 faces together? because when i tried to smooth my figure since i had 2 faces right next to each other they smoothed spearate leaving two cylinder type things as toes. is this possible? need help quick please. and that means when i want the toe to look like a toe i have two flat smooth toes on top of each other looking really BAD! i really need help quick quick quick! im dying over this issue.

Merge the vertices.

I normally merge ALL the vertices of a model with a distance set to .0001.

what i dont get is that when i merge vertices nothing happens. i even go into the properties and do that but still nothing happens. what is supposed to happen and what exactly am i supposed to do if im doing tihs wrong?

EDT: ill just restart the dang thing! ok? it been very confusing so far so why not just end it.:bgreen: :bgreen: :bgreen:
