Please i really need help with reducing polygons

I have a model thats already very high on polygons, and its very hard to animate because it slows down everything, is there a way i can switch between back and forth between a hi-res and low-res pf the model??

don't double post. it's really kinda annoying.

secondly, go into your maya help documentation and do a search for 'proxy reference', then look at the tutorial for it. that should be what you're looking for.
