There is an option before you export to Maya as obj paly with the options cant remember right now the exact settings

hi do u mean by export model as obj file in 3ds max and import to maya? i try ald cannot...

It should select the object and export to wavefront obj it will give you the pop up menu then play with the different options Although I have 3ds max 6 I dont think things have changed much
