This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

the new unwrap tool is called Unfold UV's

There is a decent tutorial that comes with maya to get you started with it.

In the UV texture editor go to Polygons -> Unfold UV's

Take a look at Modo. There is a nice 'bug' in the current release (103) that is a UV Unwrap tool. There can be some problems with things like ears, but you can unwrap them separately.

It's not a bad modeller either.

Can you unwrap in the demo without having watermarks or restrictions? Just wondering as its a big outlay just to use that element.

Yep, it's a fully featured demo with a time limit, which can be renewed (once or twice, I cannot remember exactly).

Check it out. You'll probably never want to model in Maya again.

I still haven't tried modo, but from what I've seen from the features demos it looks like it has a nice Unwrapping tool.

Have you tried the new Unfold UVs tools within Maya 7.0 as stavs82 suggested (it looks very similar to Blender's LSCM unwrapping if you've used it)

Zbrush won't really help your UV layout at all - at least not with Zbrush 2.0 - I haven't read up enough on the 2.5 features that will be available yet

I think the most monumental tool you can use for UV layout is an intelligent Relax tool - as in one that takes into account the size of the polygon on the geometry instead of just adjusting for equal spacing within the UV editor. This 'simple' tool takes a LOT of the work out of tweaking. This is in Max 8.0 and DeepUV I know - though I'm not sure what the restrictions are on the demos of these products. I'm not sure, it may also be available in other products.

Anyway, just my opinion

I think the thing like Modo's unwrap tool would be 3ds max's pelt mapping. I dont know if funky bunnies said it, but I might as well see that. I am running maya 6.5 so the best things to do with that would to try to find the correct mapping method and try to just relax all uvs that overlap... usually its enough. Sometimes it isnt. Anyway, this is what I have to say.

Btw funky bunnies, i cant find the pelt mapping on the demo of 3ds max 8, is it even on there?

Matt, it should be on the demo, I'll have to check it out... it's in the unwrap UVW modifier if it is available. There are options for planar, cylindrical, spherical, etc projections and then there's pelt too at the bottom of the rollout.

As I don't want to create new topic again I'll use this one. What I would like to ask you is that if Unwrella is a good choise to unwrap your models or how to do it then ?
