mesh problems

Hi

I have been following the head video tutorials and have got strange results after smoothing my head around the ear, i have enclosed a jpeg for you to see.

I have welded all the vertices.

i am new to maya so any help will be greatful

Looks like the normals are facing the wrong way on the ear section. You can also try to go to edit polygons> normals> conform. Then hit soften/harded option box and make the model soft.

sorry i have not written earlier, i have screwed my neck up so haven`t been able to go on computer till know.
