Opening MAYA Vers.6 files in Vers.4

Is there anyway to open maya version six models or files in version 4. I keep getting an error.
I have tried saving from 6 as a MAYA ascii and attempted to open in v 4 but to no avail. This seems so naf bec in every other application I use, you can save from the newer version software so that it can be opened in older software.
For example, if I am using Adobe Illustrator CS or version 10, I can export or save a file as an Illustrator 8 file. I cant figure out how to do this in MAYA.
Help!
