I've been approached to do the visual effects for a low budget hi definition sci-fi feature. Looks like I'll be creating and animating a monster creature, a few spaceships and and a bunch of FX animations (explosions and such). I probably won't be able to post any pictures here until after the movie is released due to a non disclosure agreement between the producer and myself though. I'll keep you guys posted as best I can and I'll look to you for help if I get stuck on something.

I used maya particles for the particle effects. The alien model was a soft body loaded with springs to keep it together as a radial field tried to blow it apart. Gravity pulled the model down at the same time. The particles were a surface emission from the alien model's skin.

Cool, I've used realflow for a similar effect, filling the object with particles then using a forse to move them about etc etc.

I might give your method a blast, but I always end up banging my head using springs and softbodies as they always seem to go ape! (I did a car crash using them and it too ka hell of a lot of fiddeling to get it right!)

good stuff, nice to "see" you again. What happened to the science fiction short you intended to make with this model? Is it still going?

I lost interest in the project.... shortly after that, I started working on the sci-fi film I mentioned above. I guess it doesn't matter when you do CGI just as long as you do it!

Velusion. Although this is slightly off topic, I just felt that I must ask: where on earth did you get your fat cat picture? do you own that cat?

LOL!

I get asked that question from time to time. That cat is a picture that I found on the internet somewhere. I can't remember where or why I was looking for it but there is was. I do have 2 cats living in my house but neither of them is as chubby as the one seen below my name.

Thank you.

The scene is surrounded by a half sphere that I colored and used for Final Gather. There is also a spotlight to simulate the sun and there are also several area lights.
