Question regarding how to model cornice molding

I'm a previous user of 3DStudio Max and am new to Maya. I need to model cornice molding, whereby I create a simple spline (consisting of angles and curves) that I can extrude. In 3DS Max, I would create a rectangle shape, then add, delete or modify the vertices or manipulate the bezier curves to get my profile to be extruded. My question: In Maya, what is the equivalent of a spline? What tools can best be used to create the spline? How do I then extrude the spline? How can I check to make certain the spline is suitable to extrude (completely closed)?

You can also use a CV curve or EP curve Under the Create roll out and extrude a shape along the curve.

You don't have to loft to get the same action as in Max.

You can either xtrude as a polygon or nurbs. Either way you can convert each one to the opposite
later using the Modify rollout then use Convert.

Thank you for the reply! I have been able to figure out how to make (and to close the curve prior to extruding) BUT when I extrude, I get a "tube-like" object with no top surface. I want to make an irregular shaped, solid platform. Is there a way to extrude a curve so the operation behaves much like a polygon cube or cylinder, with the result having a top surface? I've tried converting to a polygon but it still does not create a solid form with a top surface. Thank you SO much for your help and knowledge.

Yes you can select the curve and make it a planer.

This will produce a new object.

Then you will have two peices to combine together. Under Mesh rollout

Select the vertices of the new object around the edge and under the Edit Mesh rollout use the merge tool.

I suggest you make sure the merge tool is set to .001.

Also you should check the face normal of your top to be sure it is facing the right way.

After that you need to be sure the top is properly typologized. Meaning quads if you can.

Hope this helps
