maya viewport issues

That's normal. Seems like either you didn't follow a step or the instructor forgot to include it but your cube needs more subdivisions. Maya can't deform geometry that isn't there.

You need to marquee-select the vertex in order to select the other side. A single click only selects the closest vertex.
