This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

How can i simulate waves?

easy way is an animated texture.
or with softbody and maya's deformers,
or fluid effect (if u can afford it)
and particles

I am using 5. I am on the PLE and a mac so... my choices are pretty slim I guess you could sayuser added image

Well, once you said you were on a Mac, I KNEW your Maya version is the "Complete" version, rather than the "Unlimited" version, as Alias has not made an "Unlimited" version for the Mac as of yet..

(plus, the PLE is only available as "Complete" so... anyhoo...)

Sadly, the PLE version of Maya is just like the "Complete" version meaning advanced tools such as Fluids, Fur, Live and Cloth are not available to youuser added image

In your case, might I suggest checking out the docs regarding:
"Soft Bodies".

Simply put, you could group/parent Dynamic Fields to your object, and with those, effect the particles of a softbody plane for a make-shift wake.
