Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

That looks really good, I draw my hat.
How long does one frame take to render?

farbtopf, at the render settings for the last image, it takes about 4 1/2 minutes per frame. If I add final gather, and more shadows, it goes up to about 10 minutes or so.

Dilberts are you rendreing using Mental Ray? Thought you were going to use the software rendering set up you created?

Cheers

gster123, the set-up is exactly the same with the lighting etc., but using the mental ray renderer with no GI or Final Gether. It just seems like Mental Ray can be a little faster and crisper, and I'm more familiar with optimizing renders with mental ray, rather than the software renderer. Side-by-side though, there's really not much difference between the two renderers with this scene.

wow 4 1/2 is not to bad. I can't wait to see your animation. Are you going to put sound on it?

Dilberts- wow. Thats really really really reall really really really really really cool! You [almost] have this challenge made! Apart from Magicsy, you're miles ahead of everyone! Gr8 job!

There shouldn't be.The maya software render is a very optimized raytracer that can't do almost any distribution raytracing(apart from soft shadows). GI and FG are just that.

The only difference would be that the software renderer's artifacts would be noise, and MR's artifacts would be blotches (caused from low-accuracy photon mapping and the use of irradience caching and filtering to try to remove that)

Just want to clarify anyone's ideas about "Software renderer as good as mental ray???! No way!"

(and to show off my raytracing knowledge user added imageuser added imageuser added image):attn:

Whoa, that's way over my head, I'll take your word for it. Suffice to say, I do like Mental Ray and use it 90% of the time.

It shouldn't be over your head if you use mental ray 90% of the time. You should be able to spot the differences.

actually, I was wrong about why the Mental Ray makes blotches

Its actually the particular method of Final Gathering used- tracing a single photon from the light to the point, doing that for all points, storing a photon map, and then averaging all of the results in a particular area (thus the FG radius). The higher radius and the less photons, the worse the img will be. Esentially the FG rays dont have to exceed 200-300 because they are each used as an addition to the photon map and they mean the amount of rays that are cast from each point used to correct the initial photon map.

I'm going to be posting my final entry in the next two days. The final avi file is about 8MB, can someone tell me how to compress/zip the file to be able to post it in the entry thread. I'm not to hot when it comes to the computer geek stuff. Thanks in advance

What I would do is use quick time and compress it further until it has the size you need it to be. Than compress it to zip, as from my experience zipping files usually doesn't take a lot of weight of them.
I'd use a sorenson3 compressor and maybe change the size of your animation if it doesn't get small enough.

I just posted my final entry. If someone has the time, can you check that the transformation video works. Here's the entry, and a couple of scree captures showing the rigging and lighting setup.

Here's the rigging setup. It was quite a pain to rig.

And here's the lighting setup. This lighting setup is nice for product visualization also.
