I'm new to this forum and to Maya!

Hiya! I'm Lorna, but my "internet name" or whatever is Rise.

I'm completely new to this and am about to open Maya for the first time.

Can someone help me with where to start?

What would be a good thing to try and do first?

Does anyone know of any good newbie tutorials?

:attn:

Thanks! user added image

Welcome

Have a look for tutorials by a dude called Peter Ratner (think its that)

If you google "Peter Ratner Female torso tutorial" you should get a link, though I would recommend going through some tuts first as its pretty intense if you dont know the tools and techniques.

Cheers

Steve

Thanks!

I have an annoying grey patch that covers half of the area that you edit in...I have the non-commercial version and IDK if this has anything to do with it?

Also, I have no middle mouse button! :o How do I scroll up, down, left and right without it?

Lastly, how can I save something as a .jpg?

1 sounds like the camera clipping planes, open the outliner and select the camera and change tehe far plane,

2 Think your a tad screwed as maya needs a 3 button mouse

3 Save a render or a pic?

Welcome to the boards. Sounds like you have display issues related to your hardware. Update your drivers or it could be that you have an incompatible video card. And yeah you do need a three button mouse :x. Right click the image in the render view, File> save image, but I really would advise against saving as a jpeg since the jpeg compression in Maya is pretty terrible, you can save it as a tiff and convert it in Photoshop or something.

Welcome!

That big Grey mass may just be your attribute editor.
Try hitting (ctrl a a) on you keyboard to brake it down to the ChannelBox, alternatively you could just click on the small checker strip that runs along the top of the Attribute editor, and collapse it completely.

Good luck, and most importantly...
Have fun!!user added image
