Violin Scroll

Hello everybody, I'm hoping someone can help me figure out the best way to model a violin scroll.

I have been struggling with this for some time. I'm using Maya 2010, and would very much prefer to model this in polygons rather than nurbs.
Originally I just extruded faces from the neck all the way in a winding circle to form the scroll and then extruded the faces on the side to try and make the scroll, but the final result was very messy/ugly.
I have looked around on the net, but so far I have only seen suggestions for nurbs, and I'm not too well versed in nurbs yet...
Any help/ideas would be awesome! Thanks!
