Modelling Help

I am trying to create the effect of two pieces of thin cloth wrapping around a pole, the material is not my problem, what I am struggling with is actually creating the model to apply a material to.
So far I have tried creating a helix and wrapping it around the cylinder but it is too thick for what I need and I have no more ideas.

The effect I am looking for is something like this:

Any help would be very much appreciated user added image

Does it have to be modeled? Could you not just fake it with a displacement map?

It would be best if it was modeled but a displacement map might have to do, I didn't actually think to do that so I will have a go and see how it turns out.
Thanks for replying.

What you can do is use the helix to get a curve (modify, convert, poligon edge to curve) then douplicate this down then select the two edges and do a surface loft, convert to polys then extrude out..........dave

Edit: make a duplicate of the mesh then -1 scale in the Y

I converted one of the edges of the helix to a line however it is still connected to the object and I cannot remove it from the object, what have I done wrong?
Thanks

I have it pretty much done however I was wondering how you got the object to be so smooth and curved and the edges, mine just looks square almost.
Thanks

I did rebuid the curve first 100 spans you could reduce this to say 50...............dave

Edit:I have a habit of rebuilding curves first so forgot to tell you sorry

The handle looks good but the head looks like it could do with a few more polys to define the shape and may be the shaft going a little higher into the head like the referenceuser added image.................dave
