Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Funnel Web Spider

Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie to the Simply Maya forums. I thought I would start posting finished and unfinished work.

Here is a Funnel Web Spider I rendered a while back.

Modeling - Maya/Zbrush
Texturing - Zbrush(polypaint)/Photoshop
Rendering - Mental Ray

Those are lovely renders, well done. How did you create the web strands? Or are those photo backplates?

SpiderWeb Silk

Hi Stwert..

I did it the easy way - relatively.

I used this tool (, to create textures (with a little bit of Photoshop layering etc):

1. An alpha (cutout opacity), (red image = Phoptoshop alpha)
2. Translucency
3. Spec (added a ridiculous amount of noise)
4. Normal Map - (noisy, overly sharpened image taken into "crazy Bump" for export)

So it is a 3D effect but nothing special. It works though.

Some textures used:
