Ok, here is the new and improved (I hope  ) texture for the dragon. How do you guys like it?

Okay, that does look better.

1. It looks like you have a bump map on there (or it could be part of the texture itself) but the bumps are evenly distributed. Too "tiled"

2. he still sort of looks wet. The reflections are just on the back and wings now instead of the front.

3. Something isn't right about the wings. Scales on the wings? doesn't sound very lightweight and flexible (as wings should be)

Thank you very much for the feedback.
For the bump map, I am using Maya's 3D leather, which by being a solid material, makes it nice and even. I had tried before to map a 2D custom bump map on the dragon, but had many problems in the other direction, that is the scales were too uneven and would get deformed on the UVs.
The bump map is not completely even though: the network of nodes I created for this material has quite a few things going on, including making the scales more visible where the material is darker.
The highlights are the result of changing the material from Phong to Blinn, and by playing around with specular rolloff and eccentricity.
I totally agree with you that scales don't belong to wings and ears, just been too busy working on the body and legs. The wings still have an old texture. Same goes for horns and claws. Just that the body was the major thing I wanted to get done.

Sy,
That wet look takes away the from the identity of a large winged reptile. If he was a water based dragon (and probably without wings if so) then the skin would look really good for that, if thats what look you are going for its a suggestion. I just read this thread from start to this page and it was really nice to see the progression of your creature =) I hope you continue with updates.

CyberAL, thank you for keeping up with this thread, I really appreciate!
Actually, I am sorry it still looks wet, mostly because the purpose of the new texture was to add dimension to the scales, even adding a little "iridescent" look to them, but lose the slimy look. I suppose I will have to do more work on it. I don't know if it's the same for you guys, but I tend to get sort of "used" to seing my work and to knowing what it should look like, so I miss the benefit of the 1st time impression you guys get. So, please keep up the great help!

I have done some more work on the textures.
I think I will move on, now, and build some landscape around the dragon. When I have that done I will start rigging it, so I can put it in a better pose than it is just now.

MUCH better!

Now take a quick look at those horns. Green horns? hmm...

Anyway, good luck with the landscape. I can see you are improving at a nice rate, this is good! user added image

for me the texture is too uniform (on the bump at least). What about giving it a smoother underbelly and larger scales ontop? At the moment the bump looks almost like carpet user added image Also I'm sure it's been asked but what's up with the antialiasing? is that just to cut rendertimes down? be nice to see a full blown pic just to really crit the texture properly.

I would agree, i think its texture filtering you need to put on, your resolution cant 'handle' the sharpness of the texture on some of the areas,

Thank you for the feedback.
I have been doing some experiments with the environment in which I want to put the dragon. I played around with Bryce to come up with some interesting rock formations. This is just a first trial, just to see what comes out.

Rock formations? I thought that was an early version of what will become a waterfall. (based on texturing)

And you're using bryce for the environment... is this screenshot edited in photoshop or did you somehow import your dragon into bryce... or was it done in bryce all along and I just assumed that you are using maya because this site has maya in the title?

I know, I have a tendancy to overanalyze things.

Does your dragon move?

You sure do overanalyze things!!!!
The dragon is done in Maya, don't worry...
I created a few rocks in Bryce, exported them as .obj files, then imported them into Maya. I rendered the dragon and the rocks over a black background, then imported it into Photoshop and added the background.
Actually, I have been toying with the idea of the waterfall, in fact, more of a lava-fall... I had applied this texture to the rock, then when I rendered it, I saw that it kind of looks like a waterfall, so I think I will get going with some particles and see what comes out.
I am still trying to work out the camera angle and landscape setup, so I may get a few other trials going before I settle down for a specific one. If anybody has suggestions on this I will be glad to hear them!
