This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

No, I never took any sort of classes beyond how to generally use Photoshop. I've only recently in the past year or so really started to get decent with textures, but it'd difficult with just a mouse. Most professionals use a wacom tablet or some sort of pen-based hardware which can really help.

All my textures are made 100% in photoshop. I use photo sources where applicable. The only thing taken from a photo on Duke here is the skin, flower petal, underside of his boot, and some of the seams on his pants and boots. I'll more than likely use a photo for the belt buckle and spurs, too.

Pretty much everything else is just using brushes; layer options for beveling, drop shadows, etc; and some filter effects... not too many. user added image

Here's what I got so far. I know I'm using more textures than a real game would probably allow. ;P

EDIT: Removed old image.

Sorry for the size.

I hope I didn't sound like I was complaining. user added image Believe me, that's not the case. Besides, I can't win anyway, so that's not an issue. lol

Well mike, that is awesome, i cant wait to texture my robot.. once i do we can find out if i actually can do something in photoshop, or if i have to learn how to texture user added image. As of now, i think you really have it down pat. Great job mike. BTW, a low poly challenge would be so cool, just.. there seems to be more and more challenges popping up, and not enough people to fill them. OOH, you mean a future challenge like for a april challenge or whatnot. Yes that has already been thought of and will most likely be a challenge in the future user added image. Well, at least I like the idea.. its decided by all the mods in general though. Ok, ttyl, cya.

BTW, mike.. if this was going to be for a game, would you want to trim off the edges and make then black or white, to lower the file size? Or would that not be a factor. Just wondering.

the main thing I would do for a real game character is keep my texture maps to only 1 or 2, possibly 3 if using small sizes... I'm using 4 or 5 for this, but mainly cuz it's just a portfolio thing.

I don't know of any "how to make textures" tutorials... It's pretty much just a matter of knowing how to use Photoshop.

Hmm texturing tutorials... thats more like art tutorials with photoshop. I suggest looking up how to do "art" over a sketch. Its a progress when you take a drawing you made and then use lots of different colors and paint brushes to paint overtop of the drawing and make it a actual painting in a way. Some people are absolutely amazing at it. I dont know any sites that give these tutorials off my head, but i have came across tons in the past. I think it may be called matte painting.. not sure. If you learned this, then you could do the same technique for your models textures.

Looking so good!!

The textures are so well done. You have def got to be some artist to get them looking like that - as well as knowing photshop V well.

cheers
