rendering a image

Hi people, I'm 17 years old, just got interested in Maya and was playing around abit, the dog tutorial helped me out alot but i still have this little frustrating problem, when i render an image, the background is black ad the object is simpel with no shadow and light effect and stuff...

how do you make it look like this( remember, not the shapes)

read the forums practice with all the available help files in maya, use tutorials. theres not really a way to just say oh yeah press this button........
