Extruding faces in Maya 6

I am VERY new to this program so I'd appreciate some help. Why is it that when I extrude a face there is no "Move/Rotate" motor for the selected face? I've seen this appear automatically after an extrusion is performed for others...

up until now, I've been extruding the face, then having to click the move/rotate/scale tools to use it. After I extrude, no tool appears

the soft modification tool appears to be it... is it? and if so why doesn't it appear automatically

once you have extruded - look at the channel box down the right hand side - there should be the input for the latest extrude - click on that - the extrude manipulator should appear - if not try T again
