Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

Armor rush - the first encounter

Hello all.
This is my first post and my first try at subd-modelling. Those of you who are on IRC may have seen me as 'santa' there.

Anyway, since I like learning new things and starting overambitious projects I decided to try model an M1A1 Abrams MBT. Using mostly polys and subd's. I got a hold of some excellent blueprints from a 1:35 Tamiya model which my good friend Stefan scanned for me (in 3000dpi... producing a 275 mb large tiff... well all the details are there user added image ).

I am not the best, nor the fastest modeler around so this may take a while. I started out getting the main chassi (or whatever its called on a tank) and the sidearmor roughed out. Then I went on to make the roadwheels. I am having problems getting mental ray to render my subd's, the documentation says something about triangles not being good, I'll try to fix that. For now I convert everything back to polys, a bit inefficient.

C&C aswell as tips are welcome.

the sprocket looks fantastic, really nice detail on it. I'm not 100% on the body of the tank... seems a bit odd to have all that detail in the sprocket (which I guess may not even been seen very much due to the tracks) and not so much on the actual body of the vehicle. Mite be better off re-doing the body.

Cheers

No worries, the body is far from done. I just wanted to get the main mass in there so I get a feel for the other parts.

Thanks for the encouragement
Been working on the treads today. Having trouble lining up the springs with the tracks, will probably have to do it manually.

More stuff, new armorpanels and the tracks are remade to line up with the sprocket (by hand, took forever user added image user added image ). I think its shaping up. Feel free to criticize.

Umm, sick?
The mesh is pretty heavy as it is, but it's not a problem for me, Im not going to animate it (I think). It's more of a way to learn really detailed modeling, which I know nothing about. What I am worrying about is texturing it, It will probably be a pain. I'm having loads of fun doing this, I just hope I will be able to finish it. Brian Ellebracht has been a great source of inspiration.user added image
