Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Aug/Sept - Norm - Darkware

Hmmmm..... it's been a year since I last entered a competition here. Been several months since I've even touched Maya...

Anyway, I'll be doing a dinosaur based around the body structure of a tyrannosaurus rex. The head might be roundish if the idea I have in my head looks right with the rest of the body. If not, I'll give it a boney look and maybe some horns on top or something. The small arms of a T-Rex will be replaced with longer arms, although I currently have no special design for them as of now. Despite the obvious uselessness of having wings on such a large and heavy creature, I plan to add them as well. I'm thinking along the lines of bat-type wings that you see on demons and such. The backside will hopefully be covered with spike-ish protrusions of bone. I'm not sure if I want to go with a Bowser look with a shell-like plate along the back (not as thick and obvious as Bowser's however) that runs from the top of the head to the base of the tail or go with a more realistic look.

Anyway, I suppose we'll see how it goes and cross bridges when we get there.

Here is my progress so far:

between cooking dinner, working on homework drawings for college, and talking on the phone, I managed to conjure this up:

dinner was good... rice and vegetables with some soy sauce and then the inevitable can of Mountain Dew. Finally got my drawings for college done too so now this dino can have my full individed attention. Here's what I have:

changed the angles of the leg parts and developed it a bit more. Added the tail...

worked nearly 2 and a half hours on the wings and they were hard as hell to do... Had to run edges all along the lower portion to prevent it from screwing up when smoothing which took an eternity as well as other tweaks here and there to make it look right. Here are two shots of what I've done. One early on, then the almost finished wings. I'm going to still try to improve them if I can by making the bottom inner skin parts slightly curved upwards.

*rubs eyes* just woke up again... I dunno if I can model anymore today because I have a painting to do for my 2D Design class. :\ That will take several hours.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I just read that this whole compitition is in honor of the T-Rex DVD that just came out for SM... I'd like to state for the record that I have not purchased the DVD so none of my ideas are coming from it or anything. I didn't even realize this until just now, so please don't think I'm trying to be cheap or anything. =P Had I known earlier, I probably would have chosen a slightly different design, but oh well.

On another note, I should be able to continue modeling tomorrow afternoon. ;-)
