frosting is nurbs, candy is poly (im faster with poly's and since this is a scene for still's only, I dont care if they are a little on the heavy side user added image )

here is an update... I think its way too bright right now, I'll tone it down for the next render

*sings* Walkin' in a frosted candy-land *sings* Looks sweet man. (No pun intended). You should make the walkway/path out of gingerbread too. user added image

here is a new render...

keep in mind, as of right now, Im only using colored lamberts as textures, eventually, the gumdrops will have a bump and specular for texture and sugar. Also, as you can see, the candycains are lacking their stripes!

Anyway, I think that once I get the modeling and lighting figured out, then I'll put on the textures.

Oh, Im still having trouble with mental ray crashing (I have a post on this topic in the tech forum) I want to add another nurbs plane under the house for more detailed snow/frosting. The more detailed plane will be U50xV50, yet everytime I add it in, maya crashes when I try to render. Whats strange is that maya crashes when the plane is the only object in the scene, or when the object is part of what I already have. There jsut seems to be something about rendering a sculpted 50x50 nurbs plane that mental ray doesn't like

shadows

You should be able to up the resolution of the shadows so there not as EDGY! Go to your light node and beef up the shadow res (i think its that) to like 1024 x 1024 or further if needed, this should render out nicely, but it looks great, maybe some snow?

Hey all... I added texture to the candycains.. im not sure what to do with the frosting on the ground... any ideas? also, any suggestions for lighting? Im brand new to texture and lighting... so Im not sure about good maya lighting strategies. Right now I have GIjoe set to .015 intensity, and 3 point lights (.3 intensity) around the house (3 different colors purple, blue, and light blue)

you might want to offset those pointlights a little... as the candycanes in the front have shdowes going in opposite direction and it looks really off. For the frosting on the ground you might want to put.. like waves, wooshes in it. kinda like it was spread with a frosting spreader.
