How to make 3d Projection Maps?

I was watching my Maya traning tape, while they were explaining how to use 3dTexturing Projections color maps. They showed how to apply it, but not really anything about how to make the color map in Photoshop.

A need an article on the best way to make them before I import them into Maya. I can select object, set projections and color with no problem. What I need to know is how to prepare the map , should I color in shadows and highlights, and stuff like that, or do I just make the colors and let Maya do the rest? How close does the detail matter, or will it not show up anyway? Do they need to be opaque? Do they need to be oversize? Will they project on both sides of the model? How do I remove the stretch in the map at the edges of the model? Anyway, stuff like that...

I don’t need to know how to use the projection. I need to know how to make/color the map in Photoshop.
