Tracks

Hi Supradevil,

The tracks are just deformed nurbs toruses (torii??? (what's the plural of torus???.

Grab the inner hull of the torus ring and scale it out. Then grab the control points at the edges of the shape and pull them in vertically (assuming you have the track the same way up as mine).

Then you've got the central control points. YOu'll find that these make the track shape a bit rounded so scale them in too.

Basically it's just a flattened torus as I say. Fiddle about with it and you'll get it.

Then I converted from nurbs to polys and smoothed them off.

The wheels are just poly cylinders.

As for making em realistic, I think that it's best to do bump mapping for the treads. Like I said in a previous post it will take time to add them to the model. I _think_ if you do them black and white the tracks will stand out.

I'll post my bump map on here (if it works!!) to show you what I've done. Then you can do something similar.

Tracks

Ok here's my tank treads.

I can't tell if the v's are sticking up or down. Can someone tell me.

I just used a black and white bump map. I tried inverting the black/white but got the same result. It looks to me like the v's are sticking out downwards on the top of the track.

Can someone tell me what they think, and what I should do to make them stick upwards (if they're not).

to me they seem like they are sticking down......lol
You can try going into the attributes and playing around with the Bump Depth in the bump mapping attributes. Try making the nummber a decimal, and negative........if I remember correctly.
If im wrong, or there is a better way.....please share. user added image

Progress......

OKay here's what I've done so far.

I managed to resolve my mental ray problem.

I've UV mapped the main body of the vehicle.

Still need to find some way of fixing the tracks to the body. I'll look at some pics of tanks to get some ideas.

Still need to jazz it up a bit.

Need to paint the bars too.

More later.
