Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Mar/Apr - Norm - Forlax

Design a robot with a job in mind? Very interesting. There should be some interesting designs out there.

First thoughts:

Well, what do we always need?

A robot that will open your pretzels, beer and order pizza. Nah. Too dull.

This needs thinking about. I think for this one, the more the beer prior to design the better. That's settled. I'm off down the pub to think about this.

More later.

Concept

Okay, so I went down the pub. Had a few pints. As ever, I overheard somebody's conversation. They were talking about going surfing at our loacal resort. In this weather??? They're mad!!!

Anyway, it got me thinknig. I thought about some kind of marine robot. Something that can surf, swim and maybe save lives.

Still needs thinking about, but it's something to chew on.

More later.

Concept Take 2

Okay I've scrapped the marine robot idea. My sketches were turnng into a more futuristic vehicle than robot.

Anywas I've come up with, what I think is a better idea - a fire fighting robot.

Sketches to come....

be careful! Might want to check out the entries at SL. One of them also thought of a fire-fighting robot. I don't mind similar ideas, just try to make your entry different enough .

Okay thanks for telling me Mike. I'll try to come up with a new idea and check the other sites like SL.

If I do stick with the fire fighting idea. I won't look on SL. That way the chances of clashing are slim.

But I think a new idea is best.

Thanks,

Forlax.

Concept Take 3

Okay, I made my final decision last night.

I'm going ot design and model a gardening robot. My ideas thus far are that it can dig, sow, water, harvest.

Sketches to come.

Thanks,

Forlax.

Concept Sketch

Ok here's my concept sketch. It's a bit plain looking. Might add some more detail at some point. I think it will look nice when I texture it. And there's something else inside.

Thanks,

Forlax.

Progress....

OKay, here is a rendering of what I've done so far.

I think it's very plain. Perhaps too plain to be in the norm category. What do you guys think?

Also, do you think it will be easier to do the track treads with bump mapping? It seems silly to spend all that time modelling when I could bump map. Never done treads before.

Anyway, please let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Forlax.
